Are there citizenship requirements for an SLC employee?

Yes. Under Federal law, an individual may not be hired for a paid position with SLC unless the individual meets 1 of the following requirements:

    • The individual is a United States citizen.
    • The individual is lawfully admitted for permanent residence and is seeking citizenship as outlined in section 274B(a)(3)(B) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B)).
    • The individual is admitted as a refugee under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1157) or is granted asylum under section 208 of that Act (8 U.S.C. 1158) and has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible.
    • The individual owes allegiance to the United States by virtue of being (1) a non-citizen United States national born in or having ties to American Samoa or Swains Island (as outlined in section 308 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1408)) or (2) a non-citizen United States national pursuant to section 302 of the Joint Resolution entitled “Joint Resolution to approve the ‘Covenant To Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America’, and for other purposes”, approved March 24, 1976 (Public Law 94-241; 90 Stat. 263)).

What happens after I apply for a position at SLC?

You will receive an email confirming that SLC has received your application. The SLC hiring committee will review all applications and notify applicants that are selected for a phone or video interview.

What are the selection criteria for positions with SLC?

The Staff Attorney and Summer Law Clerk positions are filled on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement, writing ability, work experience, and an in-person or video interview. The Legislative Assistant and Receptionist positions are filled on the basis of demonstrated computer skills, attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and a professional approach to the functions of SLC.

When do Summer Law Clerk and Staff Attorney positions become available?

SLC typically hires 2 to 3 summer law clerks every year, with the application process opening in late summer. Staff attorney positions are filled subject to the needs of the Office and the availability of appropriations to fund each new hire.
