Staff Attorney

About the Job

A Staff Attorney provides legislative drafting services to Members and committees of the Senate without regard to political party or affiliation. A Staff Attorney is responsible for drafting original measures, including bills and resolutions, for introduction in the Senate, preparing amendments for measures under consideration by the full Senate and by committees of the Senate, and assisting Senate staff on a variety of legislative issues. In order to produce professional quality legislation, a Staff Attorney must review all work product for legal sufficiency and constitutionality and work closely with Senate staff to ensure the draft legislation reflects the policy intention. A Staff Attorney works as a member of a team of 7 or 8 other attorneys who specialize in various areas of Federal law, with assistance and mentoring provided by more senior attorneys.

A Staff Attorney receives a starting salary of $94,200, with competitive increases in salary similar to those provided under the Attorney General’s Honors Program, as well as a robust benefits package.

Requirements

An applicant for a Staff Attorney position must satisfy the following requirements:

    • A record of academic excellence, evidenced by ranking in the top 1/2 of the applicant’s law school class.
    • An ability to write clearly and concisely.
    • No substantial participation with any political party or cause.
    • A commitment to public service.
    • Commit to having no substantial political involvement during SLC employment.

An applicant hired as a Staff Attorney must graduate from a law school that is accredited by the American Bar Association before joining the Office, and, not later than 1 year after joining SLC, be a member in good standing of a State bar.
